SKSL Walking for Autism Speaks in Kansas City

From Lacey, Co-President of SKSL...Today I walk for Jack. The challenges - the rewards of autism. The little milestones that scream big progress. I join a community of families who start as strangers yet instantaneously bond due to this unique connection. I walk thinking of the therapists and teachers who have abecome like family. Each one has walked a portion of this road with us and hold a special place in my heart as they work tirelessly to help Jack reach goals that seem so distant. I walk being grateful for @SKSL for being a continued support network and unbreakable friendship. Autism has taught me unspeakable patience and unconditional love. It has given me strength to advocate without fear. But mostly, the art of functioning on minimal sleep and knowing that God's mercies are sometimes disguised.

  

October Support...Making Personalized Brochures!

Join us in making FREE personalized brochures with facts about your child to quickly and effectively communicate your child's special qualities and needs. All you will need to create your brochure will be available at this meeting. We provide the supplies, technology, brochure template, and personal support. If you would like to have your child's photo on this brochure, please bring 1 or 2 photos in digital format or email them to specialkidsspeciallove6@gmail.com and we will have them all ready for you to use in your brochure! It is recommended that you use a close up picture of your child to aid in identification for those using your brochure. Free childcare available...if you'd like childcare, please send us an email to specialkidsspeciallove6@gmail.com  so we can plan accordingly...Thanks!  Please pass it on...ALL Welcome!

Join us on a, socially safe~special needs friendly, fun afternoon at a local PUMPKIN PATCH FARM!! Activities include carving pumpkins, making pumpkin pie & campfire smores, meeting the friendly farm horse, canoeing on the family pond, hayrides and more! All FUN and all FREE!!! KIMT reports on FDA ruling on Autism!!

Great news on KIMT! FDA ruling to help crack down on those trying to give substandard care for families desperate for help. There isn't a quick cure but there are ways to help. The only therapy that is scientifically proven to be effective at addressing the needs of an individual with autism spectrum disorder continues to be ABA directed by a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA). Visit the Board Analyst Certification Board (BACB) at http://www.bacb.com/ to see if there is a quality provider near you!

KIMT News 3- The Food and Drug Administration says they are cracking down on those who say they have a quick cure for Autism.

The disorder now impacts 1 in every 68 children in the U.S. and that number could be growing. Autism is also one of the fastest growing serious developmental disability. We talked to an expert in this field who told us more about the condition. “At this time, unfortunately we do not have a cure. There is no cure for Autism, however there are a number of things that can help, that can help with symptoms,” Therapist and Physiologist Sharon Davern said.

Davern also told us that you need to talk to your doctors before doing any treatments.
